Armour of God spanish TV version

Hey, King King, I'd like to congratulate on your spectacular site! There's nothing like it on the web :eek ;) pls keep up the great work man! I'm not so so sure, but I believe Spanish Armour aired late night on the Spanish tv station TVE1 sometime in 1988. At the time, you must understand that alternate versions of HK movies were being illegally sold by the bundles around the world. These versions, along with the regular list list of Asian films, were ususally pirated out of the houses of the workers of certain video companies in HK and the CEO's of these companies, who were themselves secretly involved in petty quick buck piracy schemes as well! From experience with certain professionals in the European tv broadcasting business, certain tv stations and video distributors bought these versions from connection because they were cheaply priced and thought these versions belonged to the public domain because they were different from the original, and the stations thought they could air a showing of a particular, lets say, new release of a popular movie at the time, like Armour, for ratings, without "gooey poisonous fangs in the arse" or "a vicious spider's bite to the tongue" ala Golden Harvest. In any case, the people that sold them these versions usually informed the "customer" of what they were buying, so both parties probably knew what they were selling and buying, otherwise it wouldn't be on tv or video. That's my take on how this version made it on the air, as there could be many variations to this theory.

It's quite interesting to note that the old English dubbed version of Armour is edited differently than the Chinese versions, which means that there can be many versions of this movie out there. Many times, I asked to peep through the GH vaults, but I was refused constantly and told that the footage they had wouldn't see the light of day, among other vague excuses, from "We're too busy" to "who are you? Why you want to look?" so I forgot about, or to use a better word, gave up on, GH because I wasn't interest or in the mood for HK cheap talk and here I am. That Spanish version could have been an early Japanese print. I was in Madrid around the time this movie aired and I admit I have seen a few scenes of this Armour, and I do remembered it aired more than once. Watching the old English dub and the Chinese versions years later doesn't remind me of the version I saw. I can't remember details because it is so long ago, it was late at night and I had a busy day, and to be honest with you, my memory isn't so bright on certain movies and things like credit cards and bills(watching too many kung fu movies at once, and those ocassional drinks), but I do remember that Chan had a crew cut most of the movie and he did alot of scenes that way in Yugoslavia or where ever they were location shooting with that hairdo. I do not remember Alan Tam fighting any women or anything like that. He may have done that, but I didn't see all of the movie. Just certain scenes, as I was busy pissed and half awake those nights, due to various outdoor events, including tasting wines, grabbing the breasts of female statues, playing Romeo until I'm tired of it, being well fed for a few borrowed shillings, and other extra curiccular activities that include watersports. In Spain, everything is done in the day, so you can see what is happening, that's why it's better to have a decent night's sleep. ;)

Bahumbug! In 1988, an Australian friend of mine at the time informed me that Armour was playing Melbourne, which surprised me, because Project A 2 was released in Frankfurt, where I happened to be at the time, and suddenly all of these Jackie Chan movies I've read about are popping up all over Europen cinemas, when I was expecting to see these movies come out on Betamax or VHS. Being the globe trotting transient that I am, I decided to travel to Melbourne(not just to see Armour, but to share a beer with my friend) and saw a screening of the dubbed Armour which I loved. That's all the information I have on Armour. For some reason, I just never remembered much about that movie, but the English dub had some of the wittiest lines I've ever heard in a dubbed HK movie. Vaughn "Savidge" Savido and those guys, those English dubbers, were artists. The made the Jackie Chan of the 80's in my opinion. This last year, I had seen one of those scary redubs made by Fox I think. It sounded like the Ninja turtles dubbed the movie, with the exception to Jackie's voice. I did notice that the writers followed the lip movements word for word, hiring a lip reader per se, and parts of the story, in particular the cave scenes with the grand wizard talking to Jackie ect, sounds much better than it ever has, but I do miss the old spitfire dub of Vaughn doing Jackie and word wanking with Alan Tam(I think he used his own voice for the old dub) with those witty lines. That's class. Oh, I'm going into tears. The golden age of HK cinema. The 1980's. |I

Cheers,

Back to work! Oh, I'm on vacation! Wait a minute? What is work, and I'm not on vacation!?! If you'd be a bum like me, you'd understand. Stay in school, keep the bottles on the winestand, the beers under the sink, grabs the cigarrettes, crush them, toss em in the air, kick em, and keep your body pure.

Happy New Year, and may you all buy boxers that don't stangle the intestines and find designer shoes that don't cause corns. Then you'll be happy. Remember, 2 for 1, buy one get one free. That's life. :D

Take care ya'll and keep up the great work on your site, King King.
